The Core Is Back: UTRGV Women’s Golf Eyes Another Run

UTRGV women’s golf already answered one big question.

Yes, the Vaqueros can win the Southland Conference.

Now comes the more interesting one: What do they do next?

UTRGV opens the 2026-27 season Monday at the Bear Brawl in Greeley, Colorado, just a few months removed from a historic season. The Vaqueros won the Southland Conference Championship by one stroke over Houston Christian and earned the program’s first trip to an NCAA Regional.

And instead of starting over, UTRGV brings back the entire five-player lineup that won that championship.

That’s what makes this season worth watching.

UTRGV entered the final round of the Southland Championship one shot behind Houston Christian. The title was still up for grabs late before the Vaqueros caught fire, playing the final five holes at eight-under as a team.

Pitchayapa Pungpho birdied her final four holes. Natalia Rodriguez birdied three of her last four. Miriam Barcalova made the par putt that put the championship away.

UTRGV finished with a program-record 868 over three rounds and was headed to its first NCAA Regional.

Now they get to run it back.

Four Vaqueros to Watch

Natalia Rodriguez, Senior

Rodriguez led UTRGV with a 76.8 scoring average across 11 events last season and earned Second Team All-Southland honors. She finished tied for sixth at the conference championship and fired a three-under 69 in the final round.

On a roster with plenty of talent, Rodriguez gives UTRGV something every championship team needs: a senior who has already been through it.

Miriam Barcalova, Junior

Barcalova made an immediate impact in her first season at UTRGV.

She earned Southland Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-SLC honors while averaging 77.0. Then she tied for second at the conference championship at even-par 216.

She also gets to carry one pretty cool distinction forever: Barcalova made the putt that officially made UTRGV Southland champions.

Now we get to see what Year 2 looks like.

Pitchayapa Pungpho, Junior

If there’s a breakout candidate on this team, Pungpho has our attention.

She averaged 77.4 last season and recorded two top-five finishes, but it’s hard to ignore how she finished.

Pungpho went 73-72-71 at the Southland Championship to tie Barcalova for second. And with the championship hanging in the balance, she birdied her final four holes.

That’s the kind of finish that makes you wonder what might be coming next.

Zoe Hobbs, Junior

Hobbs gives UTRGV another experienced golfer capable of contributing near the top of the lineup.

The UAB transfer averaged 77.0 over nine events and recorded three top-20 finishes, highlighted by a seventh-place finish at the Islanders Collegiate Invitational.

She might not get the attention of some of the names coming out of the championship, but that’s also part of what makes this team interesting. There isn’t just one player UTRGV needs to carry the load.

Newcomer to Watch: Kanyanat Kamphoo

UTRGV’s returning group is already deep, but freshman Kanyanat Kamphoo gives us another name to keep an eye on.

Kamphoo comes to the Valley from Khonkaen, Thailand, with an impressive junior résumé. She won the individual national championship at Thailand’s 2025 National Student Sports Championship and helped Thailand earn silver at the 2025 World School Golf Championships.

That doesn’t guarantee immediate success in college golf, especially on a team returning a championship lineup.

It does make her interesting.

If Kamphoo can push for a spot in that lineup, UTRGV suddenly becomes even deeper than the team that won the Southland last spring.

So, What Comes Next?

Repeating as conference champions is a different challenge than winning it the first time.

Houston Christian will want its title back. Every team in the conference knows UTRGV is the defending champion now. And what happened last April doesn’t give the Vaqueros any strokes this September.

That’s what makes this season fun.

We know UTRGV can get hot and win a championship. We know this group can perform when the pressure is on.

What we don’t know yet is whether last spring was one incredible run — or the start of something bigger.
