DITV OPINION PIECE

Monday Receipts is where we take the quotes from the week, match them against what showed up on Saturday, and see which ones still spend.

Last Monday we asked one thing: Can the standard travel? Arkansas answered. Not pretty, not easy, not clean. Just 30-27 in overtime, the first road dub of the year, the first OT win in program history, and Broderick Taylor — Turbo — hitting the edge like everybody had somewhere else to be.

That’ll spend.

RECEIPT 1 — “THE GUYS DID NOT FLINCH.”

Travis Bush — UTRGV Coaches Show

Now this is what I’m talking about.

UTRGV did not suddenly become mistake-free football robots in Conway. They false started near the goal line, missed a field goal, threw a pick, let UCA tie it late and then walked into overtime with every road ghost from the first half of this season hanging around waiting to introduce itself again.

Usually that is where the game starts feeling familiar.

Here we go again.

Not this time.

Bush said afterward the Vaqueros had a different mindset “from the moment they got on the plane Friday” and kept living for the next play because “the guys did not flinch.” (Source: UTRGV Coaches Show, Oct. 2026)

That lines up perfectly with what Turbo told Bryan Ramos after the game:

“Team came out here and played harder for longer, just like Coach Bush has been talking about all week.”

(Source: Bryan Ramos, RGVSports, “Stripes Earned: Inside the Vaqueros’ OT road thriller vs. Central Arkansas”)

That is the part people miss when they talk about toughness. Toughness is not flexing after a tackle when everything is going right. It is blowing a chance, feeling the game tilt and still lining up like the next snap belongs to you.

UTRGV finally did that away from The Vack.

Receipt stamped: the road problem didn’t disappear. UTRGV finally stopped feeding it.

RECEIPT 2 — WHERE ARE THE FREEBIES?

Remember this one?

Last week I asked where the cheap yards were because UTRGV had been making offense look like a full-price shopping experience.

Saturday, they answered with 177 rushing yards.

And this is where the receipt gets interesting, because it was not just “we ran harder.” Bush explained exactly what changed:

“We knew they were real thick inside. They were really good inside. You didn’t see us run inside much.”

Then he laid out the answer: off-tackle runs, gap schemes, perimeter stuff and pullers getting into space. (Source: UTRGV Coaches Show, Oct. 2026)

That is ball.

You do not get bonus points for repeatedly running into somebody else’s strength just because it looks tough on TV. UCA had dudes inside, so UTRGV quit donating carries to them and went looking for grass.

TJ Dement found it, going for 78 yards on 13 carries. Broderick Taylor found plenty too, adding 68 yards on eight carries with two touchdowns.

Once that run game got moving, the whole picture changed. Linebackers had to step. The edge had to honor the puller. Rangel keeping it mattered. The RPO game had some teeth again.

And the walk-off was basically the entire adjustment gift-wrapped.

Kyran Lee — KDot — motions. The action pulls eyes one direction. Turbo gets the sweep going the other way and has enough grass to hit the accelerator.

Twenty-five yards.

Goodnight, Arkansas.

Bush described Taylor’s winning run as an RPO where the motion and play action helped pull defenders away before Taylor used “amazing footwork” to stay in bounds and finish it. (Source: UTRGV Coaches Show, Oct. 2026)

That is what I mean when I ask for freebies.

Make the defense wrong before asking your athlete to become Superman.

Receipt stamped: UTRGV finally found some yards without paying cover.

RECEIPT 3 — “GARRET RANGEL SHOULD BE BACK IN THE MIX NOW.”

Travis Bush — UTRGV Coaches Show, one week earlier

Yeah, about that.

Garret Rangel was not just “back in the mix.”

He came back and grabbed the whole aux cord.

Rangel finished 24-of-35 for 241 yards with a passing touchdown, added another score with his legs and made some grown-man plays when the down-and-distance got disrespectful.

Third-and-20.

Third-and-23.

Those are usually apologies before the punt team comes jogging onto the field.

Rangel kept drives alive anyway.

Bush said Rangel had a “great week of practice” and a “different demeanor about himself,” almost like he understood he had “another second chance, a second opportunity to get this thing rolling.” (Source: UTRGV Coaches Show, Oct. 2026)

Second chance?

Yeah, that’ll preach.

Because Rangel played like somebody who knew exactly what was sitting in front of him.

He was decisive. He used his legs when the picture broke down. He hit windows over the middle. And maybe most importantly, he gave this offense something it has been hunting for:

rhythm.

Bush also gave him the postgame dap:

“Rangel made some huge plays. He’s back, he’s healthy and he really looked sharp at times tonight.”

(Source: Bryan Ramos, RGVSports)

Was it perfect? Nah. There was still a pick, still some decisions Bush said need cleaning up, and nobody needs to start engraving anything after one Saturday.

But this offense did not look like it needed a permission slip for every first down.

Receipt stamped: “back in the mix” turned into back with the keys.

RECEIPT 4 — “WE’VE GOT TO EVALUATE ACROSS THE BOARD.”

Travis Bush — UTRGV Coaches Show, one week earlier

This receipt had my attention all week because “evaluate across the board” sounds good on a Monday.

I wanted to see if anything actually looked different Saturday.

It did.

Different quarterback. Different offensive-line combination. T.K. Mina started at center. Cole Molina got his first career start at right guard. Jaydon Smith was out. Clint Thomas Jr. was out. Brennan Carroll was out. Aidan Jakobsohn was out. Reid Mikeska was out.

That depth chart looked like somebody hit shuffle.

UTRGV still put up 418 yards.

Bush’s explanation afterward was almost beautifully simple:

“We made less mistakes. We didn’t shoot ourselves in the foot as much.”

(Source: UTRGV Coaches Show, Oct. 2026)

Sometimes football does not need a TED Talk.

Stop helping the other team.

Cameron Glenn made clutch catches. Christian Sabsook stepped up. Braden Baize kept doing Braden Baize things — being where he was supposed to be and turning a third-and-23 into another set of downs.

Bush called Baize “consistent and solid,” the kind of player who keeps showing up until suddenly he is exactly the dude you need. (Source: UTRGV Coaches Show, Oct. 2026)

The defense had its own version.

Jaiden Haygood — Tha Goods — went ridiculous with a program-record 20 tackles. Spencer Rich broke up what Bush said could have been the game-winning touchdown late in regulation. Alijah Prosser grabbed a pick.

And after dropping 20, Tha Goods immediately passed the dap to the big fellas:

“Really, my numbers come from that D-line. They were eating all night.”

(Source: Bryan Ramos, RGVSports)

That is linebacker talk.

The front eats the blocks. Tha Goods, Richie Rich and JWaid come collect.

Now, before we throw confetti over everything, UCA still ran for 233 yards. That is absolutely going on the film-room whiteboard this week because Lamar is not coming to The Vack with a polite little run game and a thank-you card.

So celebrate the adjustment.

Then keep adjusting.

Receipt stamped, for now: something changed.

Don’t let it be a one-night special.

THE MONDAY RECEIPT

Here is why I like this win: it was ugly enough to tell us something.

Bush called it a “15-round boxing match” and said UTRGV just needed to land one more punch than Central Arkansas. (Source: Bryan Ramos, RGVSports)

That is pretty much what happened.

The Vaqueros missed chances, created chances, blew some, survived some, lost dudes, got tied late and still had enough juice left to throw the last punch.

Last Monday we asked if the standard could travel.

Saturday it finally packed a bag.

Now Lamar comes rolling into The Vack, and Bush is already calling for every ounce of “Valley Voodoo” the 956 can find.

Bet.

Bring the candles, bring the egg, bring whatever your tia swears worked back in the day.

UTRGV finally brought a road win home.

Now protect the house.

No refunds, my peoples.
