Monday Receipts: The Ceiling Is Real. Now Show Us the Direction.

Monday Receipts is simple: keep the quote, watch the football, come back Monday and see what still spends.
One week UTRGV put No. 25 Southeastern Louisiana in a box and held them to three points. The next week Southeastern turned around and knocked off No. 8/10 Lamar 34-31. So that receipt aged beautifully: the Vaqueros did not beat some pretend ranked team. SLU can ball. UTRGV just made them look regular for a night.
Then came San Antonio.
UIW 41, UTRGV 16. Another road trip, another L, and now the Vaqueros are 0-4 away from The Vack. That is where Monday lives this week. We already know what the ceiling looks like. I want to know why this team keeps leaving it at home.
RECEIPT 1 — “IF YOU’RE GOING TO BLAME ANYBODY, BLAME ME.”
Travis Bush — UTRGV Coaches Show
DITV READ:
Okay, Coach. I respect that one.
Bush did not hide behind three injured offensive linemen, Jaydon Smith going down, three Aidan Jakobsohn interceptions or UIW simply having more dudes in some matchups. He went straight to the head coach. If players are making reads they have been coached not to make, turning the ball over or repeatedly losing details, then maybe those details have not been coached well enough.
That is grown-man ownership. But ownership is only the first swipe of the card. Now the receipt has to clear.
The road losses keep having different plots but somehow find the same ending.
Something small goes sideways, then the next thing gets loose, and suddenly UTRGV is chasing the game. UIW spent game week talking about critical moments. On Saturday, they won most of them. That is the part UTRGV has to own.
The defense gave UTRGV chances early and spent too much of the night defending short fields and momentum swings. Jaiden Haygood and Spencer Rich were around the football all night, and the unit made enough plays to keep UTRGV hanging around before UIW eventually started winning more of those one-on-one battles and breaking tackles in space.
That is the part I want fixed. The Vack version of UTRGV absorbs a bad snap and keeps playing. The road version has been letting one mistake invite its cousins over.
Bush says blame him?
Fair.
Receipt open: ownership is step one. Show us the correction.
RECEIPT 2 — “WE WANT THE EXPECTATIONS HIGH FROM THE FAN BASE.”
Travis Bush — UTRGV Coaches Show
DITV READ:
Say less.
Because I am officially retiring the Year Two coupon.
Nobody is saying UTRGV is a finished product. It obviously is not. Depth got tested hard Saturday, and UIW showed there are still roster spots where the athletic margin gets thin in a hurry. But you cannot show me the Southeastern game and then ask me to forget it when the road gets bumpy.
UTRGV held that team to three. Southeastern just turned around and beat a top-10 Lamar team. That is not potential anymore. That is evidence.
And DITV is part of that fan base too. I love this team. I want to celebrate it, talk about it, defend it when the criticism gets lazy and push it when the standard slips. High expectations are not me rooting against the program. They are the opposite.
As a fan and a former athlete, I believe people tend to rise toward what is expected of them. Bad days happen. Successful programs do not normalize them. They correct them before they become habits.
That is what I hear when Bush says he wants expectations high.
Perfect.
Because the 956 already lives there.
Receipt stamped: no discount code for Year Two.
RECEIPT 3 — “GARRET RANGEL SHOULD BE BACK IN THE MIX NOW.”
Travis Bush — UTRGV Coaches Show
DITV READ:
Oh.
Now you have my attention.
Garret Rangel being “back in the mix” probably sounds like a routine health update in August. It sounds a little different after Aidan Jakobsohn throws three interceptions and an offense that has been fighting for easy yards walks out of San Antonio with 16 points.
Before anybody starts a quarterback civil war, that is not what I am doing. Jakobsohn has made winning throws this year. We literally watched him deliver them against Southeastern.
And Bush did not announce a starter change. He said Rangel should be back in the mix.
That distinction matters.
But he opened the door, so we are allowed to peek through it.
What does “in the mix” mean? A package? A series? Real competition during the week?
A change-up when the offense needs a different temperature?
Because the bigger issue is not simply QB1. It is how much sweat UTRGV is spending to manufacture offense.
Clint Thomas Jr. — CT2 — is becoming a legitimate vertical problem. Kyran Lee — KDot — can stretch a defense. There are dudes outside. But the Vaqueros have rushed for 72, 66 and 56 yards over the last three games. When the run game stops making linebackers hesitate, everything starts costing retail. Edge rushers get to hunt. Safeties can sit back. Passing windows stay crowded. Protection has to last longer. Now every explosive needs somebody to make a grown-man play instead of the scheme stealing a cheap one.
That is my football question this week: where are the freebies?
Give me the screen that embarrasses pressure. Give me motion that tells the quarterback the answer before the snap. Give me the run that makes a linebacker take one false step. Get CT2 or KDot the football with grass and let them handle the rest.
Good offense should occasionally make you laugh because somebody got schemed so open it felt disrespectful.
Right now too many UTRGV yards have a cover charge.
If Rangel can help change the rhythm, let the evaluation breathe. If Jakobsohn answers it, even better.
Receipt open: “back in the mix” just made quarterback practice a little more interesting.
RECEIPT 4 — “WE’VE GOT TO EVALUATE ACROSS THE BOARD.”
Travis Bush — UTRGV Coaches Show
DITV READ:
This is the receipt I circled twice.
Bush did not just say the players need to execute. He talked about evaluating himself, the staff, personnel, scheme and the roster, then added that UTRGV needs a sense of urgency about getting where it wants to go.
That is a real statement, because “across the board” means nobody gets protected by the easy answer.
If the run game has gone quiet, examine why. If protection keeps becoming fragile when injuries hit, examine whether the answers fit the bodies available. If UIW out-athleted and out-physicaled UTRGV in spots, then development cannot be the only plan; roster construction has to matter too. And if a team can look this comfortable at The Vack and this uncomfortable on the road, then somewhere between preparation, scheme, personnel and mentality there is a wire that is not traveling.
Those are not fire-everybody questions. They are football-program questions.
Nobody needs panic after seven games. But self-scouting without ego? Absolutely. Find what travels and feed it. Find what keeps breaking and stop pretending repetition will magically turn it into a strength.
And this matters now, not just in December.
The rest of this season is not schedule filler. It is live tape for the next version of this roster. It is part of the pitch to the player already in the building, the recruit looking at the program, and the portal guy wondering if the 956 is a place where he can come help win.
Central Arkansas is another shot to finally steal one on the road. Then you come back home with Lamar and SFA still on the board, and Houston Christian still waiting later.
There is plenty left to prove.
The Vack should always be an advantage. Keep the music loud (fix the speakers), keep the crowd on top of people, keep making visiting teams feel the 956.
But The Vack cannot become a security blanket.
The tackling has to travel. The protection has to travel. The confidence has to travel. And whatever answers made Southeastern look lost have to survive the bus ride too.
Receipt still open: The Vack is the advantage. The finish is the pitch.
THE MONDAY RECEIPT
I still like this team. The defense has dudes. Clint Thomas Jr. is heating up. There are weapons on offense. And Southeastern beating Lamar only made UTRGV’s best performance look better.
That is exactly why I am pushing harder, not softer.
Bush says blame him. Bush says keep expectations high. Bush says Garret Rangel is back in the mix. Bush says everything gets evaluated.
Good.
The ceiling already introduced itself.
Now the finish tells us what direction this thing is really headed.
The future is already watching.
No refunds, my peoples. 🌴✌🏽956
