What Scares Me About UIW? That 2–4 Record Is Lying to You.

DITV | UTRGV Football
Fam, that 2–4 record is telling one story. The football is telling another.
UIW just went toe-to-toe with No. 5 Stephen F. Austin and No. 10 Lamar, losing those games by a combined five points. Against SFA, a penalty wiped out a successful two-point conversion. Against Lamar, a late fumble ended a comeback bid.
The Cardinals aren’t getting pushed around. They’re competing with some of the Southland’s best, but haven’t figured out how to finish.
Now UTRGV heads to San Antonio fresh off a 13–3 defensive masterpiece against No. 25 Southeastern Louisiana.
But peep the matchup. UIW can move the scoreboard in a hurry. UTRGV just won a game with 66 rushing yards.
That’s where things get interesting.
What Scares Me: Emmett Brown Makes You Defend Everything
UIW quarterback Emmett Brown has thrown for more than 1,700 yards through six games. Against Lamar, he passed for 303 yards, rushed for 50 net yards and accounted for three touchdowns.
Brown creates problems when plays extend. Play soft, and he can take underneath completions. Rush without lane discipline, and he can escape.
UTRGV’s front needs to disrupt his timing while keeping him contained. The secondary can’t lose receivers when Brown leaves the pocket.
UTRGV can win the initial coverage battle, but if Brown escapes and defenders lose their assignments, one extended play can undo an entire series.
What Scares Me More: Everybody Gets a Plate
WR Isaiah Champagne is Brown’s volume target, while WR Jacob Emmers is becoming an explosive-play problem.
Emmers caught a 53-yard touchdown against SFA, then followed it with seven receptions for 104 yards against Lamar, including a 74-yard score.

Add WR Zach Phipps and WR Price Morgan, and Brown has options.
The challenge isn’t simply covering one receiver. It’s maintaining coverage responsibilities when routes stretch the defense horizontally and vertically.
UTRGV’s linebackers have been excellent attacking downhill, but UIW can challenge the space behind them. One missed assignment can erase an entire series of good defensive football.
What Scares Me Right Now: The Run Game Tells a Different Story
UIW rushed for just 98 yards against SFA and 83 against Lamar.
Against quality competition, the Cardinals have leaned heavily on Brown’s arm. That’s an opportunity for UTRGV.
Win early downs, force obvious passing situations and give defensive coordinator Gamble opportunities to pressure Brown while mixing coverages behind it.
But there’s a catch.
Brown accounted for 50 of UIW’s 83 net rushing yards against Lamar. His mobility adds another responsibility for defenders, especially when protection breaks down and passing plays turn into scrambles.
UTRGV needs to make UIW one-dimensional without letting that one dimension take over.
What Scares Me on Defense: Negative Plays Can Wreck UTRGV’s Rhythm
UIW defender Jeremiah Young recorded three sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss against SFA. LB Christian Barney added 12 tackles.
Those are drive-killers, and UTRGV can’t afford many right now.
Against Southeastern, QB Aidan Jakobsohn threw for 244 yards, and the Vaqueros converted 8 of 13 third downs. Encouraging numbers, but 66 rushing yards on 21 attempts won’t consistently create offensive balance.
Lamar just ran for 275 yards against UIW.
That’s an opportunity for RB Brennan Carroll, RB TJ Dement and the offensive line to establish themselves early.
Win first down, stay ahead of the chains and keep UIW’s pass rush from attacking predictable situations.
Because third-and-long is where promising drives go to die.
What Scares Me Underneath It All: They’re Battle-Tested and Coming Home
UIW has faced Northern Arizona, Texas State, SFA and Lamar on the road. The Cardinals haven’t collected many wins, but they’ve experienced quality competition and close fourth-quarter situations.
Now they’re back home after nearly a month away, facing the same UTRGV program that beat them 56–28 last season.
Meanwhile, UTRGV has unfinished business of its own.
The Vaqueros are undefeated at The Vack, but road penalties, turnovers and missed opportunities have already cost them.
That defensive standard needs to travel.
Because UIW has enough offense to punish the mistakes that UTRGV survived at home.
What Scares Me Most: The Defense Can’t Keep Paying Everybody’s Bill
Here’s the whole thing, fam.
UIW can throw it around the yard, but the Cardinals have also struggled to run against ranked competition. UTRGV has a defense capable of exploiting that imbalance.
Against Southeastern, the Vaqueros forced three interceptions. DB TJ Neal collected two, while LB Jaiden Haygood delivered a fourth-quarter end-zone interception that helped keep the Lions off the scoreboard.
They held a team averaging more than 32 points to just three.
That’s winning football.
But the offense has to meet them halfway.
UTRGV showed its potential with a nine-play, 93-yard touchdown drive against Southeastern. The challenge is producing that kind of execution consistently.
Because UIW doesn’t need to dominate an entire game. Brown needs a couple of explosive plays, and suddenly UTRGV is chasing points instead of controlling the football.
The Vaqueros proved they can win a defensive fight. Now they have to prove they can handle a team capable of turning that fight into a shootout.
That 2–4 record might fool somebody. It better not fool UTRGV.
