Volleyball: Edinburg Vanguard Ran District 31-3A Last Year. Now the Door Might Be Open

Edinburg Vanguard made District 31-3A pretty simple last season.

Twenty district matches. Twenty wins.

There really wasn’t much of a race.

This year could be different.

Vanguard still deserves all the respect that comes with going 20-0 in district play, but seven seniors are gone from last year’s 11-player roster. Meanwhile, Edinburg IDEA is coming off a 23-win season and could return eight of the 10 players listed on last year’s varsity team.

That is why we’re making a pretty bold preseason call.

We’re picking Edinburg IDEA to win District 31-3A.

Edinburg IDEA Has the Best Preseason Case

This isn’t about ignoring what Vanguard did last year.

The Gladiators were clearly better in the head-to-head matchups. They beat Edinburg IDEA twice, including one sweep.

But this is a new season, and preseason picks are about what comes back just as much as what happened before.

Edinburg IDEA went 23-9 and 16-3 in district play last year, and only two players on the listed roster were seniors.

That potentially leaves Kaira Nunez, Alexy Gonzalez, Makayla Martinez, Neomi Cepeda, Azul Fernandez, Tamara Anaya, Jimena Gama and Brianna Alvarez coming back.

That is a lot of continuity for a team that was already good.

Nothing about this pick feels automatic. But if we’re choosing between a defending champion replacing most of its roster and a 23-win runner-up bringing most of its roster back, Edinburg IDEA gets the edge.

At least for now.

Vanguard Is Reloading, Not Starting Over

Twenty straight district wins buys you a lot of respect.

It just does not replace seven seniors.

That is the challenge facing Edinburg Vanguard.

The good news is the Gladiators are not starting from scratch. Mia Guajardo led the team in aces as a freshman and gives Vanguard an interesting young piece to build around. Karla Garza, Maelyn Cavazos and Maddisen Quintanilla also saw varsity action last season and could step into much bigger roles.

So no, we are not calling this a rebuild.

This is a reload.

And if Vanguard reloads quickly, nobody should be surprised if the Gladiators end up right back on top.

They already proved what the program can do.

Now we get to find out how much of it carries over.

Pharr IDEA Could Make This More Than a Two-Team Race

Pharr IDEA is the team that keeps us from calling this a clean two-team race.

The public record from last season is incomplete, but the results we do have are enough to get our attention.

Pharr IDEA split two five-set matches with Edinburg IDEA.

That matters.

It also went 17-9 in 2024, so there is more than one season of evidence that this program can compete with the better teams in the district.

We do not have enough returning-player information to move Pharr IDEA ahead of the two Edinburg programs just yet.

But third feels right.

And if the returning roster is stronger than the public information suggests, Pharr IDEA could make this race uncomfortable for both teams above them.

Pharr Vanguard Gets the First Shot at Fourth

After the top three, things get a lot less clear.

Pharr Vanguard reached the playoffs last season and was competitive enough to take a set from Edinburg IDEA in both meetings.

That gives the Spartans the best case for our final playoff spot.

It is not a lock.

Donna IDEA, Alamo Vanguard, Alamo IDEA and North Mission IDEA all enter with enough uncertainty that one good jump could completely change the middle of this district.

That is where we are not going to fake certainty.

We have a projection, but Nos. 5 through 8 feel much more fluid than the top four.

The Middle Could Change Fast

Donna IDEA gets our slight edge in that group.

There are at least a few results that suggest the Titans can be competitive, even if we do not have enough information yet to make a strong playoff case.

Alamo Vanguard has had trouble breaking through against the district’s better programs in recent seasons.

Alamo IDEA and North Mission IDEA are harder to evaluate, but both have a chance to make this projection look wrong if they take a step forward.

And that is really the story of this part of the district.

We know who the favorites are.

We do not know which team is ready to make the biggest jump.

Quest Has the Most Ground to Make Up

Edinburg IDEA Quest enters 2026 with the toughest starting point.

The Trailblazers have struggled in the reported results over the last two seasons and have had a hard time staying with the district’s stronger programs.

So the first step may not be talking about the playoffs.

It is closing the gap.

Win more sets. Turn some of those sweeps into competitive matches. Find a few district wins.

That is where progress starts.
