Volleyball: District 32-4A Has Nine Teams, Four Playoff Spots and No Room for a Bad Night

If you’re looking for an easy district to predict, District 32-4A probably isn’t it.

Valley View went unbeaten in district play last season. La Feria finished right behind the Tigers. Port Isabel was a playoff team.

Then realignment came along and made the whole thing a lot more complicated.

Edcouch-Elsa drops down from 5A after a 23-win season. Zapata joins after another playoff appearance. Laredo Harmony comes in after beating Port Isabel in last year’s postseason.

Now there are nine teams fighting for four playoff spots.

That is what makes this district so interesting.

Somebody pretty good is probably going to miss the playoffs.

Valley View Still Has the Crown

We’re starting with Valley View for a pretty simple reason.

Nobody beat them in district play last season.

The Tigers went 10-0 in district and 19-10 overall, beat La Feria twice and carried a 10-match winning streak into the postseason.

Until somebody takes that top spot from them, Valley View deserves to be treated like the team to beat.

The biggest unknown is returning personnel. There still isn’t much public information on exactly what comes back from last year’s team, and in a district this deep, that matters.

Still, an undefeated district championship carries weight.

For now, everybody is chasing Valley View.

Edcouch-Elsa Changes the Conversation

Edcouch-Elsa may be the biggest reason 32-4A feels completely different this season.

The Yellowjackets went 23-17 and 13-5 in 5A district play last year, and they return plenty of players who were already contributing.

Alliyah Ramirez was a major piece defensively. Addison Gonzalez gave them production at setter and from the service line. Kloe Garza led the team in blocks as a sophomore, while Leila Castillo and Maya Flores were already contributing as freshmen.

There is a lot to like there.

There is also one huge question.

Who replaces the offense?

Madison Solis and Madrid Villarreal combined for more than 680 kills last season. That is a lot of production walking out the door.

If Edcouch-Elsa finds a reliable finisher, the Yellowjackets have enough everywhere else to win this district.

But we’re not handing them the title just because they are coming down from 5A.

La Feria already beat Edcouch-Elsa in tournament play last season.

That matters too.

La Feria Has a Real Shot at This

La Feria may be the easiest championship contender to overlook.

Valley View has the crown. Edcouch-Elsa has the realignment buzz.

The Lions just keep sitting there with a pretty strong argument.

La Feria went 8-2 in district last season, with both losses coming against Valley View. They also bring back an experienced group that should include Madilyn Gutierrez, Myrhanda Trevino, Jazlyn Tagle, Emily Sanchez and Audryna Aguilera as seniors.

That kind of experience matters in a nine-team district.

So does the fact that La Feria already proved it can beat Edcouch-Elsa.

If we’re talking about the championship tier right now, it is not just Valley View and Edcouch-Elsa.

La Feria belongs in that conversation.

Then the Race Gets Messy

This is where trying to make a clean top four gets difficult.

Zapata finished third in its district last season and reached the postseason. The Hawks also picked up some solid wins along the way, including one over Laredo Harmony.

Harmony has a pretty good case of its own.

The Hawks finished fourth in their old district, then beat Port Isabel in the playoffs.

That is an important result because Port Isabel finished third in the old 32-4A.

So one of the incoming teams has already beaten one of this district’s returning playoff teams when the season was on the line.

That tells you how much deeper this district just became.

And Port Isabel is not suddenly out of the picture.

The Tarpons return several upperclassmen and pushed Valley View to five sets last season. There is enough there to believe Port Isabel can stay right in the playoff race.

That is where the numbers become a problem.

If Valley View, Edcouch-Elsa and La Feria take three spots, Zapata, Harmony and Port Isabel could all be fighting over one.

Good luck feeling comfortable with that prediction.

Hidalgo and Jubilee Were Basically Even

Hidalgo and Brownsville Jubilee both finished 3-7 in district play last season.

Their head-to-head results fit that perfectly.

Hidalgo beat Jubilee in five sets.

Jubilee beat Hidalgo in five sets.

There really was not much separating them.

Jubilee does have an intriguing young player in Camila Bannak, who led the Titans in kills per set as a freshman. She enters 2026 as a sophomore, so there is at least one obvious reason to watch how much that program can improve.

Hidalgo, meanwhile, consistently handled Grulla last season but struggled to break through against the top teams in the district.

Both teams need to make a jump.

The problem is that the district got harder around them.

Grulla Has the Biggest Climb

Grulla enters 2026 with the most ground to make up.

The Gators finished 3-16 overall and 0-10 in district play last season after also struggling the year before.

So the first step may not be jumping straight into the playoff conversation.

It may be becoming more competitive night to night, breaking through for district wins and showing that the gap is starting to close.

In this district, even that will not be easy.

7. Brownsville Jubilee

We feel strongest about the top three.

After that, not much feels settled.

Zapata has a real playoff case. Harmony already proved it can beat Port Isabel when it matters. Port Isabel has enough experience to make us regret putting the Tarpons sixth.

And that is really the point.

District 32-4A does not leave much room for bad nights.

Valley View has the crown.

Edcouch-Elsa brings 5A experience and a deep returning group.

La Feria has veterans and a legitimate championship case.

Then comes a playoff race that could change every week.

Nine teams. Four spots.
