UTRGV Didn’t Show Everything in Brownsville. We Still Saw Plenty

First-team reps, personnel notes and a community event gave fans a closer look at where the Vaqueros are heading

UTRGV football opened practice to fans Thursday at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville, and while the coaching staff kept the session controlled, there were still plenty of things worth noticing.

It was hot.

The Vaqueros were in shoulder pads and shorts.

And this wasn’t a scrimmage.

But if you were paying attention, there were clues.

DITV was on site and got a firsthand look at how some of the offensive and defensive pieces are beginning to come together as the Vaqueros continue preparing for Year Two.

The First-Team Look

One of the biggest takeaways came from the personnel on the field.

Aidan Jakobsohn appeared to take the first quarterback reps with Fabian Garcia at running back.

Working around them were wide receivers Alex Green, Cameron Glenn, Tavian Cord and Kyran Lee, while Mateo Grajeda got work at tight end.

Does that lock in the depth chart? No.

Does it give fans an early glimpse of how UTRGV is putting the offense together?

Absolutely.

For a fan base eager to learn more about the 2026 Vaqueros, those are exactly the kinds of details that make an open practice worth watching.

A Familiar Look on Defense

The first-team defense featured plenty of familiar names.

Jaiden Haygood and Spencer Rich anchored the middle at linebacker, while Alijah Prosser and TJ Neal worked with the first group in the secondary.

Along the defensive front, Nathan Huerta and Jaden Wincher were among the players getting work as the defense focused heavily on shell and coverage drills.

It wasn’t a practice built around winning one-on-ones.

It was a practice that gave us a better look at who UTRGV is trusting with meaningful reps right now.

That matters.

What the Practice Told Us

With the heat hanging over the afternoon, UTRGV kept the practice controlled.

Much of the work centered on special teams, passing concepts, coverage work and installation. There were no extended 11-on-11 periods and no one-on-one competitions.

The offense mixed in a few creative looks and some trick-play work, but it was clear the coaching staff wasn’t interested in putting much of the playbook on display in front of a public audience.

That’s normal this time of year.

Fans weren’t going to leave Brownsville knowing every answer.

But they could leave with a better idea of who was getting work, what the coaches were emphasizing and how the team was being put together.

A Few Things to Watch

There were also a couple of personnel observations worth monitoring.

Offensive linemen Gannon Lauer and TK Mina were seen wearing walking boots during the event.

Wide receiver Clint Thomas Jr. was not spotted on the field during the portion of practice observed by DITV.

UTRGV has not announced the status of those players, so there’s no reason to draw conclusions beyond what was observed Thursday.

They’re simply names to keep an eye on as camp continues.

Why Being There Matters

This is where being on site adds something.

DITV had the chance to talk with a couple of players’ parents and connect with fans who follow the program and the show, including Dean’s Take and another supporter who stopped to talk football and the direction of the team.

Those conversations give you something a roster or practice report can’t.

You hear what fans are noticing.

What they’re excited about.

What they want to see next.

That perspective makes the football observations better.

And on a hot afternoon in Brownsville, it made the event feel more personal.
