The Competition Is Here: UTRGV Women’s Tennis Is Already Getting Deeper

When UTRGV women’s tennis entered the fall with half of its roster new, one of the biggest questions was how quickly those additions could make an impact.

Two tournaments in, we’re starting to get an answer.

Mariangel Estrella is beating power-conference opponents. Freshman Mirka Delaney has already collected her first collegiate victories. Juana Gomez Weiss is contributing in singles and doubles.

And UTRGV’s returners aren’t going anywhere quietly.

Estrella Is Making an Immediate Impact

Estrella has been the biggest story of the fall.

The East Tennessee State transfer arrived after an 18-2 freshman singles season, an 18-match winning streak and SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors.

She’s now 3-1 in completed singles matches to begin her UTRGV career.

After winning her debut at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open, Estrella moved into Flight 1 at the Rice Invite. She dropped her opener before beating Houston’s Alice Stevens 6-3, 6-4.

Then came Baylor.

Estrella dropped the opening set against Luna Ivkovic before battling back for a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory, capturing the Flight 1 West Draw.

Two tournaments in, the newcomer we circled before the season is already delivering.

The Newcomers Are Pushing

Estrella isn’t alone.

Delaney lost her first collegiate match before responding with two victories at the Islander Open, including a three-set battle decided by a 12-10 tiebreaker.

At Rice, she showed something different.

After advancing by walkover to the Flight 2 West Final, Delaney dropped the first set against UTSA’s Celine Absawi 6-0. She responded by winning the second 6-1 and pushed the third to a tiebreak before falling 7-6.

The comeback may have been more meaningful than the final appearance itself.

Gomez Weiss is making her case, too. The North Carolina A&T transfer has singles victories at both tournaments and teamed with Hitakamya Narwal for a doubles win over UTSA at Rice.

Suddenly, UTRGV has options.

The Returners Are Answering

That’s what makes the early results interesting.

The newcomers aren’t walking into an empty lineup.

Rhea Makesar has already produced two convincing victories, including a 6-0, 6-1 win over Northwestern State’s Martina Acebedo, the reigning Southland Conference Freshman of the Year.

Narwal has singles victories at both tournaments.

And Luna Buijtenhuijs remains one of UTRGV’s most important returning pieces after going 8-1 in Southland singles last spring.

The doubles results are encouraging, too. Estrella and Makesar defeated Northwestern State’s All-SLC First Team No. 3 pairing, Gomez Weiss and Narwal beat UTSA, and Delaney and Madeleine Joffe earned their first victory together at Rice.

All three UTRGV doubles combinations won during the weekend.

Why It Matters

UTRGV finished 5-15 overall and 3-6 in Southland play last season.

But four of those conference losses were decided 4-3.

That’s why the added depth matters.

Two fall tournaments can’t tell us whether those close losses will become wins. Individual tournaments aren’t spring dual matches, and the eventual lineup is still months away.

But UTRGV wanted more competition within its roster.

It’s getting it.

Estrella is winning against high-level competition. Delaney has already shown promise as a freshman. Gomez Weiss is contributing. Makesar and Narwal are winning. Buijtenhuijs brings back an 8-1 Southland season.

West Nott has decisions to make.

That’s a good problem to have.

Our preseason question was what UTRGV would look like after changing half its roster.

We’re beginning to see the answer.

More depth. More competition. More options.

Estrella has been the headline through two tournaments, but she’s not the only Vaquero making a case.

The spring lineup can wait.

Right now, the competition to make it is becoming the story.
