Harlingen High junior Evelynn Loera has already reached a number that tells you plenty about the role she’s played for the Cardinals.

1,500+ career assists.

Harlingen Volleyball recently celebrated Loera after she surpassed the milestone. But there’s one detail that makes the number stand out even more.

This is only her second year as Harlingen’s varsity setter.

Loera, a member of the Class of 2028, took over varsity setting duties as a sophomore. Now, before her junior season is finished, she has already crossed the 1,500-assist mark.

And she still has plenty of volleyball ahead of her.

Running the Harlingen Offense

The hitters usually get the biggest reactions.

They finish the rally. They get the kill. They get the highlight.

But behind those attacks is a setter making decisions about where the ball needs to go.

For the past two seasons, that responsibility at Harlingen has belonged to Loera.

Reaching 1,500 career assists provides a pretty good picture of just how involved she’s been in the Cardinals’ offense since taking over the position.

It also represents something that isn’t always visible in a stat line: the connection between a setter and her hitters.

Different rotations. Different situations. Different teammates.

The setter has to keep making it work.

She still has the remainder of her junior season and an entire senior season ahead of her.

There’s no reason to predict where the final number will eventually land. There’s too much volleyball left to play.
