Los Fresnos vs. Mission Vets: Three Questions That Could Decide DITV’s Game of the Week
Three weeks in, we’ve seen enough to stop talking in hypotheticals.
No more preseason talk about what somebody might be.
Los Fresnos is 3-0. Mission Vets is 2-1. The Falcons have already won a shootout, survived a fourth-quarter fight and then dropped 54. The Patriots got caught in a bad night against PSJA North, then went to Weslaco and answered with a 26-24 win.
That’s where this gets good.
Everybody has some numbers now.
Thursday is about finding out which ones actually travel when somebody across from you has an answer.
1. Can Mission Vets make Los Fresnos work for the whole field?
Mission Vets has enough on offense to affect this game without scoring every three minutes.
Roman Reyna is averaging 112.3 rushing yards per game from the quarterback spot. Carlos Abrego gives them an actual back to lean on too, averaging 54 yards per game and opening the season with 100 yards on 14 carries against Mission. Fabian Ruiz is giving Reyna a target outside at 63.3 receiving yards per game.
That matters.
A seven-minute drive doesn’t show up in a highlight clip, but McChesney can’t throw a touchdown while he’s watching it.
And Los Fresnos has plenty of ways to make you pay once it gets the ball.
Evan McChesney has thrown for 792 yards and nine touchdowns while completing 70.3%. Ryan Prepejchal is averaging 83.3 receiving yards, Kito Guerra is at 61.3, and Tyler Stachowiak is averaging 59.3 rushing yards with three rushing TDs.
Don’t overlook Stachowiak because everybody is watching the ball fly around.
Against Rowe, McChesney threw two picks and the passing game wasn’t exactly cruising. Stachowiak still produced 128 total yards and a touchdown, and Los Fresnos found a way to win 28-24. A week later he ran for 73 yards and a score while McChesney threw five TDs against McAllen Memorial.
That’s what makes this offense annoying to defend.
Lean too far outside and there’s a back underneath the whole conversation.

2. Which defense steals the possession that changes the night?
Los Fresnos has some names showing up around the football.
Isaac Elizondo is averaging 10.7 tackles per game, Prepejchal is at 9.0, and Demarkus Arellano is at 8.0. Marlon Jones Jr. has five QB hurries, with Devin Montoya and Jose Frausto at three each. Elizondo and Ismael Morenoalready have interceptions.
Mission Vets isn’t coming empty-handed.
Miguel Gomez leads the Patriots at 8.7 tackles per game, Jaden Loredo is at 8.0, and Nathan Sanchez is at 6.3. Loredo has five QB hurries, Eric Barrientos has three, JJ Garza owns a pick, and Trey Casas has a sack and forced fumble.
Nobody has to lock anybody up all night.
One possession might do it.
One strip.
One pick.
One fourth-down stop where everybody in the stadium knows what just happened.
The discipline part is what makes it interesting. Lose the edge chasing Reyna and he can be gone. Start getting thirsty for McChesney and Los Fresnos has enough outside to make somebody regret it.

3. Which quarterback has the better second answer?
Now we get to the fun part.
Roman Reyna: 882 total yards.
Evan McChesney: 871.
Eleven yards.
They just arrive there differently.
Reyna has 545 through the air and 337 on the ground. McChesney has done most of his work throwing it, with 792 yards, nine TDs and two interceptions.
McChesney gets rolling and starts dealing.
Reyna can turn a clean defensive win into a mess with one escape.
That’s the part worth watching.
Not Plan A.
The next thing.
The throw after the window closes. The scramble after the rush gets home. The play where the defense did almost everything right and still has to line up for another first down.
That’s ball.

Now somebody has to do it with the other sideline answering back.
