Football: Mercedes Finds Its Offense After Halftime, Rallies Past PSJA 20-10

For two quarters Thursday night, Mercedes kept showing flashes of an offense that looked ready to break through.

The Tigers just couldn’t finish anything.

There was a missed opportunity with a receiver running open over the middle. There was an approximately 80-yard completion that completely flipped the field, only for Mercedes to eventually come away empty after being stopped on fourth down inside the PSJA 10.

At halftime, all those flashes had produced zero points.

Then Mercedes came out of the locker room and turned them into touchdowns.

The Tigers scored 20 points after halftime, erasing a 3-0 deficit and opening the season with a 20-10 win over PSJA.

A First-Half Grind

Neither offense found much rhythm early.

Three-and-outs piled up on both sides, while Mercedes consistently generated pressure on PSJA quarterback Tavares Johnson.

When PSJA did find offense, Johnson and Isaiah Garza were usually involved.

Johnson used his legs to extend drives, including a 19-yard keeper. Garza immediately looked dangerous, returning his first punt approximately 25 yards before later breaking several chunk runs on the ground.

Mercedes had its chances, too. The Tigers produced the biggest offensive play of the half with the long completion that took them deep into PSJA territory, but a fourth-down stop at the Bears’ 9 kept them off the scoreboard.

PSJA finally broke through when Cristian Montes connected on a 32-yard field goal, sending the Bears into halftime leading 3-0.

Considering how the first half looked, 3-0 felt about right.

Mercedes Finally Breaks Through

Then the game changed.

Mercedes opened its second-half scoring with a 17-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-3 lead. The Tigers struck through the air again later in the third, this time from 21 yards out, and suddenly Mercedes led 14-3.

The explosive plays we had seen without results in the first half were finally producing points.

PSJA wasn’t finished.

Johnson connected with No. 84 for a 47-yard touchdown, pulling the Bears within 14-10 and giving PSJA a chance entering the fourth quarter.

But Mercedes’ defense didn’t allow another point.

The Tigers eventually added an 11-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth to put the game away, 20-10.

Two Teams Worth Watching

For Mercedes, this was a good Week 1 test.

The Tigers are coming off an 11-1 season, but Thursday wasn’t a continuation of everything going right. Mercedes had to work through a frustrating first half, make adjustments and find another way to win.

It did.

PSJA’s first game under new head coach Horacio Garza ended in a loss, but there were encouraging signs. Johnson’s ability to create with his legs and hit the big play gives the Bears something to build around, while Isaiah Garza showed immediately that he can be another dangerous piece.

The next step is turning those flashes into sustained drives and points.

At halftime, this felt like a game that might finish 6-3.

Instead, Mercedes came out and scored 20.

That’s the biggest takeaway from Thursday night. The Tigers weren’t sharp from the beginning. They left points on the field and struggled to sustain drives.

But they adjusted.

And when the opportunities came again in the second half, Mercedes stopped wasting them.

The Tigers leave PSJA 1-0, and sometimes Week 1 is as simple as that: figure it out and find a way to win.
