The banner says 1,000. Briseis Cortez says she’s already at 1,200.

Edinburg High’s senior setter was recently surrounded by teammates, coaches and family as the Bobcats celebrated her reaching 1,000 career assists. But by Tuesday, Cortez shared on Instagram that the number had already climbed another 200.

That’s 1,200 career assists — and her senior season is still going.

It’s another milestone for a player who has become a major part of the Edinburg offense.

Cortez put together a big junior season in 2025, finishing with 780 assists, according to MaxPreps.

She averaged 6.4 assists per set while also contributing 335 digs and 55 aces.

Now wearing No. 6 as a senior, Cortez continues to run the Bobcats’ offense and add to a career total that has quickly grown beyond the milestone her banner celebrates.

For a setter, 1,200 assists represents much more than a number.

Every assist starts with a decision. Who gets the ball? Where does it need to be? Which attacker has the best matchup? A setter has to make those decisions over and over throughout a match while also adjusting to imperfect passes, different rotations and what the opposing defense is showing.

Cortez has now made enough of those plays to help produce more than 1,200 kills during her Edinburg career.

It also takes trust.

Edinburg’s hitters have to trust Cortez to put them in position to score, and Cortez has to know where her teammates want the ball. That chemistry develops over hundreds of practices and matches, and eventually the numbers start adding up.

In Cortez’s case, they’ve added up quickly.

The celebration itself showed what the accomplishment meant. Cortez posed with her 1,000-assist banner alongside teammates, coaches and family, then shared another photo with a simple update:

She had reached 1,200.

And there’s still volleyball left to play.

We had the opportunity to meet Briseis during volleyball media day before the season, and now we’re getting to watch her put together a memorable senior year at Edinburg High.

🏐 “People underestimate us… but we keep getting better.”

One thousand career assists was already worth celebrating.

At 1,200 and counting, the question now is how high Briseis Cortez can push that number before her final match as an Edinburg Bobcat.
