DITV Valley Made: Caidyn Hoover — The Ballhawk Got the Keys. Vela Got Dangerous.

Vela handed the offense to the dude quarterbacks were supposed to avoid. That is a cold way to start a senior season. Caidyn Hoover spent last year taking possessions away. Now he gets to decide what happens with them—and he still clocks in at safety.
Ten interceptions in 2025 had already given Hoover a name worth remembering. Five came in his first varsity game against Edinburg North. Most players would gladly spend their senior year building on that. Vela handed him the keys to the offense, too.
He wasn’t immediately sold.
“I had to do it for the team,” Hoover told Sixtum Sports.
Whatever hesitation he had, PSJA North didn’t get much benefit from it: six offensive touchdowns, plus fingertips on the two-point pass that could have tied it. QB1 still had some safety business to handle.
By the time Vela left Los Fresnos, Hoover had accounted for all seven SaberCat touchdowns. Four through the air, two on the ground, one going the other direction with somebody else’s pass. Add eight tackles and three pass breakups. That is a whole Friday night packed into one jersey.
Hoover is making it hard to pick which side of the ball gets the headline. He can be the reason Vela takes the lead and the reason the other team never gets it back. PSJA North got both versions. Los Fresnos got the entire collection.
His Los Fresnos performance earned Built Ford Tough Class 6A Player of the Week, adding to the Class 5A honor he won as a safety last season. Texas already knew his name. This time, it came with a different job title.
All that production has helped push Vela to the top of the Valley. Four straight wins. A 4–1 record. No. 1, with victories over PSJA North and Los Fresnos carrying real weight. Those teams made the SaberCats earn it. Hoover helped make sure Vela left with something better than a respectable showing.
He has also kept his people in the picture. After Los Fresnos, Hoover praised George Fauls and Ryan Rodriguez for their reliability and character. Seven touchdowns attached to his name, and he still shared the microphone. Coach Sean Landez has credited him with taking accountability for mistakes, too. The spotlight comes with his name on it. So does his share of the responsibility.
The recruiting chapter already has a starting point. Texas A&M–Kingsville offered him after a June camp, before this senior-season scoring spree. Now the Javelinas—and anybody else looking—have more to watch. The quarterback highlights are piling up without making the safety tape obsolete.
Next comes district play, beginning October 8 against Weslaco. Vela heads into it with momentum, the Valley’s top spot to defend, and a senior who accepted a bigger job without giving up the old one. Hoover has helped put the SaberCats out front. A district title chase gives him somewhere to take them next.
The ballhawk has the keys. Vela got dangerous. And Caidyn Hoover just set the tone for DITV Valley Made—our High School Athlete Spotlight celebrating the players and stories that make the 956 proud.
First spotlight. Whole lot of game.
