Already at 100: Memorial Sophomore Sophia Vega Is Building Something at the Net
McAllen Memorial sophomore Sophia Vega is only in her second varsity season.
She’s already reached 100 career blocks.
Memorial Volleyball recently celebrated Vega after the 6-foot middle hitter crossed the milestone, adding another accomplishment to a high school career that has been productive from the start.
Because the 100 blocks are only part of the story.
An Immediate Impact
Vega didn’t need much time to establish herself at Memorial.
As a freshman in 2025, she recorded 72 total blocks in 112 sets, according to MaxPreps. She also finished with 212 kills and a .354 hitting percentage.
Among District 31-5A players listed by MaxPreps, Vega finished first in total blocks and hitting percentage.
She did it as a freshman.
That gave Memorial an impact player in the middle — and one it would have back for three more seasons.
Vega has continued adding to those numbers in 2026. MaxPreps’ latest available individual statistics list her with 31 blocks and 166 kills in 69 sets this season, bringing her listed career totals to 103 blocks and 378 kills.
So while we’re celebrating the triple-digit block total, another number is getting close.
400 career kills.
We’ve Seen Her Impact
This isn’t a player Diamond DITV has only followed through a stat sheet.
We watched Vega and Memorial during the Mustangs’ five-set win over Sharyland Pioneer earlier this season.
Vega finished with 10 kills that night, showing the other side of what she brings to the middle.
That’s what makes the 100-block milestone more interesting.
Vega has established herself as a presence defensively at the net, but she’s also producing offensively for a Memorial team with several different ways to attack.
And she’s doing all of it with more than half of her high school career still ahead.
What’s Next?
There’s no reason to start predicting where Vega’s career numbers eventually land.
There’s too much volleyball left.
But that’s also what makes the numbers she already has worth watching.
More than 100 career blocks. Nearly 400 career kills. Two varsity seasons — and the second one isn’t finished yet.
Vega still has the rest of her sophomore season, followed by two more years at Memorial.
That’s a lot of opportunities to keep adding to both sides of the stat sheet.
Diamond DITV Final Word
100 career blocks is a milestone. For Sophia Vega, it also gives us a checkpoint.
She made an immediate impact as a freshman. She’s continued producing as a sophomore. And she’s already building a résumé at the net with plenty of volleyball still ahead.
**Sophia Vega is at 100.
Now we get to see where she goes from here.**
