A New Conference, A New Chase: UTRGV Men’s Soccer Is Starting to Take Shape

For the first time in two years, UTRGV men’s soccer has a conference championship to chase.

And six matches into a season featuring 16 newcomers, we’re already getting an idea of what this team might look like.

We’ve seen the offensive ceiling — a five-goal explosion on the road at South Florida.

We’ve seen the defensive foundation — a clean sheet against defending Ohio Valley Conference champion Lindenwood.

UTRGV is 2-2-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the OVC.

But the record is only part of the story.

Taj Showed Us the Ceiling

If there has been one performance that showed just how dangerous this UTRGV attack can be, it came from Elias Taj at South Florida.

Taj finished with two goals and two assists in UTRGV’s 5-0 win, accounting for six points and putting together one of the best individual matches in program history.

It earned him OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors, College Soccer News Offensive Player of the Week and a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week.

More importantly, Taj wasn’t doing it alone.

Eduardo De Oliveira scored just 24 seconds into the match. Sammy Jadid made it 2-0. Mouhamed Pouye added another before Taj scored twice in the second half.

Four different Vaqueros found the net.

That’s the version of this attack that makes UTRGV interesting.

Pouye Gives UTRGV Another Threat

Taj delivered the biggest individual performance, but Mouhamed Pouye has been one of UTRGV’s most consistent attacking threats.

Pouye scored against South Florida and found the net again at Air Force, entering conference play with a team-high three goals and seven points.

That’s important for a team still figuring out how all of its new pieces fit.

UTRGV doesn’t need its attack to run through one player.

We’ve seen Taj take over a match. We’ve seen Pouye produce. We’ve seen Jadid and De Oliveira score.

And freshman Mauricio Arreguin is beginning to make his case, too.

Against Lindenwood, Arreguin put both of his shots on goal, leading UTRGV in shots on target against the defending OVC champions.

For a roster with 16 newcomers, some of those new pieces aren’t waiting around.

They’re already contributing.

Then Came the Defensive Statement

The South Florida performance showed the ceiling.

The OVC opener showed something else.

UTRGV welcomed defending regular-season and tournament champion Lindenwood to the Valley and held the Lions scoreless in a 0-0 draw.

Lindenwood entered averaging 1.75 goals per match. UTRGV held the Lions to eight shots and only three on goal.

Tobias Buch, Emmanuel Gore Bi and freshman Victor van der Aa each played all 90 minutes along the back line.

Buch’s performance earned him OVC Defensive Player of the Week.

That means UTRGV has already had conference weekly honorees on both sides of the ball — Taj offensively and Buch defensively.

Six matches in, that’s an encouraging combination.

Knight Gives Them Stability

Conrad Knight made three saves against Lindenwood and recorded his second clean sheet of the season.

Across UTRGV’s two shutouts, opponents have managed only four shots on goal.

That’s a team stat as much as a goalkeeper stat, but Knight has provided stability behind a defense incorporating new players into major roles.

And that’s probably the biggest takeaway from the Lindenwood match.

UTRGV didn’t just open OVC play against another opponent.

The Vaqueros went toe-to-toe with the team that won both the conference regular-season and tournament championships last year and walked away with a point.

Sixteen Newcomers, Already Contributing

This wasn’t a minor roster refresh.

UTRGV entered the season with 16 newcomers and nine returners.

Yet some of those newcomers are already playing meaningful roles.

Gore Bi is starting on the back line. Van der Aa went the full 90 against Lindenwood. Arreguin created two shots on goal. Jadid has already found the net.

There’s also a local connection worth watching.

Dylan Hernandez, a Pharr native, started UTRGV’s first OVC match and was involved in the attack against Lindenwood.

When more than half of a roster is new, you’d expect it to take time.

It probably still will.

But UTRGV isn’t waiting for every piece to be perfect before competing.

Something to Chase Again

Maybe that’s what makes this season most interesting.

UTRGV spent 2025 as a Division I independent.

Now the Vaqueros are back in a conference with a championship, conference tournament and automatic NCAA Tournament bid waiting at the end.

Their first home conference match in 699 days came against the defending champion.

UTRGV held them scoreless.

That’s a solid first step into a new league.

And now the OVC schedule starts moving quickly, with Houston Christian on Oct. 1 and UIW on Oct. 4 coming to the Valley.

We’re about to learn a lot more.

Diamond DITV Final Word

Six matches aren’t enough to tell us exactly what UTRGV men’s soccer will become.

But we’ve already seen both sides of what makes this team intriguing.

Five goals at South Florida showed the ceiling. A clean sheet against the defending OVC champions showed the foundation.

Taj can change a match. Pouye gives UTRGV another attacking threat. Buch is emerging on the back line. Knight has already produced two clean sheets.

And around them is a roster filled with newcomers beginning to find their roles.

For the first time in two years, all of it is building toward something tangible.

UTRGV has something to chase again.

Now we get to see how far the Vaqueros can take it.
