1,500 Assists. 800 Digs. Jozlin Rodriguez Has Never Been Just One Thing

For most volleyball players, one of those jobs helps define their position.

For McAllen Memorial senior Jozlin Rodriguez, both have helped define her career.

Rodriguez has now surpassed 1,500 career assists and 800 career digs, two milestones that tell two different sides of the same story.

She can run an offense.

She can keep a rally alive.

And throughout her Memorial career, she’s done plenty of both.

Running the Offense — and Playing Defense

Go back to Rodriguez’s sophomore season in 2024 and you can already see what was developing.

Listed as a setter/defensive specialist, Rodriguez recorded 888 assists, 236 digs and 30 aces.

She led Memorial in assists while finishing third on the team in digs and third in aces.

Rodriguez wasn’t just responsible for putting hitters in position to score. She was also one of Memorial’s more productive back-row defenders.

A year later, her role looked a little different.

Her assist total dropped to 555, but her defensive production increased to 264 digs. She also added 28 aces while helping Memorial finish 34-9 overall and 13-3 in district play.

Across those two completed seasons alone:

1,443 assists.

500 digs.

And she still had her senior season ahead of her.

Different Role. Same Impact.

Her role looked different during her junior season, but Rodriguez remained productive on both sides of the ball.

Rodriguez remained productive.

Even the final match of her junior season showed both sides of her game.

Against Liberty Hill in the playoffs, Rodriguez recorded 18 assists and 14 digs.

Not just assists.

Not just digs.

Both.

The numbers on a milestone banner are one thing.

Diamond DITV has also seen Rodriguez’s defense firsthand.

In Memorial’s five-set win over Sharyland Pioneer this season, the Mustangs trailed 9-3 in the fifth set before storming back to win.

It was one of the wildest matches we’ve covered this season.

Memorial finished with 107 team digs.

Rodriguez had 23.

Only Larae Jones, with 25, had more for Memorial that night.

In a match that demanded seemingly endless defensive effort, Rodriguez was right in the middle of it.

That’s what makes 800 career digs more than just the second number on her banner.

It’s a legitimate part of her game.

More Than a Position

Memorial has previously listed Rodriguez as a setter/defensive specialist.

She’s now listed as a setter, while Prep Dig has identified her as a defensive specialist/libero.

Maybe her career numbers provide a better description than any single position label.

1,500+ assists.

800+ digs.

Sometimes Rodriguez is delivering the second contact and giving a hitter an opportunity to finish the point.

Sometimes she’s getting underneath an opponent’s attack so Memorial gets another opportunity in the first place.

The assists tell you she can run an offense. The digs tell you she doesn’t leave the rally after the set.

These aren’t final career numbers.

Rodriguez is still in her senior season at Memorial.

The banners say 1,500+ and 800+ for a reason.

Both totals are still moving.

How high they’ll eventually climb can wait.

Right now, the milestones provide a chance to appreciate just how much Rodriguez has already done.
