1,000 Was Just a Checkpoint: Vela’s Fernanda Valdez Keeps Digging

1,000 career digs.

For Edinburg Vela senior Fernanda Valdez, even that number doesn’t tell the entire story.

Valdez recently celebrated reaching the 1,000-dig milestone, but she’s already pushed well beyond it. MaxPreps’ documented statistics from her sophomore season through the current 2026 season account for at least 1,351 career digs.

And when you look at how she got there, one thing stands out.

She’s gotten better every year.

254. Then 629.

Valdez recorded 254 digs in 105 sets as a sophomore, averaging 2.4 digs per set.

Then came the jump.

As a junior in 2025, Valdez recorded 629 digs in 126 sets, pushing her average all the way to 5.0 digs per set.

She didn’t just lead Vela.

She finished 247 digs ahead of the next-highest Sabercat, while also recording 616 serve receptions, 130 assists and 34 aces.

And some of her biggest performances came when the matches mattered most.

Valdez recorded 30 digs against Rowe, then added 27 digs in Vela’s five-set playoff win over Lopez and 29 more against Flour Bluff in the Sabercats’ final postseason match.

By then, Valdez had established herself as the centerpiece of Vela’s back-row defense.

And She’s Still Climbing

Now she’s a senior.

And somehow, the numbers have climbed again.

MaxPreps’ latest available 2026 statistics list Valdez with 468 digs through 69 sets.

That’s 6.8 digs per set.

Look at the progression:

2.4 → 5.0 → 6.8 digs per set.

That’s what makes 1,000 more interesting.

This isn’t just accumulation. Her production per set has climbed right along with her career total.

Valdez entered her senior season with 883 documented digs across the previous two seasons, meaning 1,000 was already within reach.

Now she’s blown past it.

The Work Goes Beyond Vela

Valdez’s development hasn’t been limited to high school volleyball.

She has also competed at libero for Valley Venom, where Prep Dig has highlighted her defensive instincts, anticipation, communication and consistency under pressure.

Those traits aren’t difficult to connect to what she’s doing for Vela.

The Sabercats have plenty of experienced pieces in their senior class and multiple players capable of making an impact at the net.

Valdez’s job is different.

Keep the ball alive.

Handle serve receive.

Give Vela another opportunity.

And do it over and over again.

More than 1,000 times now.

One More Season to Keep Digging

There is still plenty of volleyball left in Valdez’s senior season, so we’re not going to guess where the final number eventually lands.

We don’t need to.

The progression already tells us enough.

254 digs as a sophomore.

629 as a junior.

468 and counting as a senior.

At least 1,351 documented digs — with more still to come.
